With its mansard roof, the form of the front of the architectural glass case was likely inspired by the English cabinet clocks which were fashionable at the time. Similarly in line with contemporary style, chinoiserie, a popular decorative motif of the Rococo, is painted in gold on the red-and-black marble base.

Active in the first half of the eighteenth century, Johann Maurer was a major Prague clockmaker during the High Baroque period. His primary focus was on making pocket watches, as indicated by the use of a watch movement in this clock.
